Have you ever seen how potatoes are grown or harvested? Most people think they just come in paper sacks from the produce aisle. I have an inside look for you at how these spuds come to be on your plate. Here is a snap shot of a local farm (it just happen to belong to my parents) and how they harvest. The harvest is usually done late September to early October depending on weather as the soil needs to be dry.

Moving up the track

The digger plunges into the potato hill and brings up dirt, weeds, plants and potatoes. It bounces them along the track to shake loose the dirt and plants, finally dropping the potatoes back on top of the dirt to be picked by hands and buckets.

Freshly dug spuds ready for hand picking. These will be stored in wooden crates for the winter, dirt and all. Did you know “dirty”potatoes keep for longer in cold storage!
